Cupid Opens OBS March On High Note

Cupid’s breeze show success continued in the ring on Tuesday when three of his first four offerings at the March Two-Year-Olds In Training Sale brought over 15 times his stud fee.

His first hip through the ring was also his most expensive of the day when Ben McElroy went to $160,000 on behalf of Wesley Ward for Hip 92. Breezing a bullet :9.4 last week, the filly was consigned by McKathan Bros as agent.

The fourth foal out of the stakes winning Miss Lederhosen, she was bred by Mike Dowd. The filly sees two winners from two to race out of her dam with Miss Lederhosen from the family of multiple graded stakes winner Phantom On Tour among six stakes winners on her page.

Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners paid $100,000 for their Cupid colt out of No Wonder from Golden Thoroughbreds Training and Sales in the middle of the Tuesday session after he breezed in :10.0 last week.

Bred by William Graham in Ontario and sold as a weanling for $77,000 the colt is a half-brother to stakes winner Muskoka Wonder. His dam has continued a long tradition of breeding stakes winners as a half-sister to dual Grade I winner Weemissfrankie and the stakes-placed duo of Stop Smiling and Mia d’Oro. Another half-sister to No Wonder is the dam of stakes winner Piece of My Heart.

The colt’s third dam, stakes-placed Lite a Star, is also the dam of stakes winner Program Pick with multiple mares under Lite a Star producing stakes horses.

Consigned by Golden Rock Thoroughbreds, a Hugh Moore and Everett Dyer-bred filly rounded out Cupid’s top three when bringing $75,000 from Narvick International. Another one of Cupid’s :10.0 breezers, the filly is out of six-time winner Playing For Fun. That mare is out of a half-sister to Grade I winner Devious Course and the dam of stakes winner Heirloom Diamond.

After the first day of the sale, Grade I winner Cupid’s first 2-year-olds are averaging $95,500 with median of $87,500 – both over 17 times his 2021 stud fee of $5,000.
