Dancing Duchess Wins Algonquin For Munnings

Dancing Duchess (2f Munnings x Duchess Dancer, by Congrats) became the newest stakes winner for Munnings on Sunday with a victory in the Listed Algonquin Stakes.

The filly bumped another coming out of the gate in the five-furlong turf race before settling in the back of the field to watch the race unfold in front of her. Around the turn, she moved a little closer to set herself up for a battle going into the stretch.

The widest runner in the field up the lane, she was in full stride at the furlong marker and in a close battle for the win among most of the field at the line, she had half a length on everyone.

Trained by Mark Casse for Tracy Farmer, Dancing Duchess has finished in the top two in four of her six starts for over $190,000 in earnings. The filly was a $400,000 yearling purchase by Farmer last year when offered by Cara Bloodstock on behalf of Mitchell Kursner.

Already stakes placed, she is a half-sister to Queen’s Plate winner Safe Conduct with the pair two of four winners out of Duchess Dancer. That mare is a half-sister to Canadian Horse of the Year Fatal Bullet and stakes winner Millennia. This is also the family of another Canadian Horse of the Year in Pink Lloyd.

Dancing Duchess is the 12th stakes winner of the year for Munnings, tying him for seventh among all North American sires. In all, 29 of his horses have won or placed in stakes in 2023.
