Fancy Liquor Wins Again for Lookin At Lucky
Ending the day with a Grade II winner on Friday at Churchill Downs, Lookin At Lucky picked up right where he left when Fancy Liquor (3c Lookin At Lucky x Brandys Secret, by Secret Romeo) won the Grade II American Turf Stakes presented by Smithfield as the first stakes on the Derby day card.
Racing over 1 1/16 miles on the turf, Fancy Liquor bided his time in the back of the spread out field as three leaders dueled in front multiple lengths ahead of the rest. Wearing distinctive orange silks and blinkers, Fancy Liquor started closing as the field entered the far turn to sit just a few lengths behind as they entered the stretch.
Fancy Liquor closed down the outside to easily pass the leaders and win by half a length for Mike Maker and owners Skychai Racing and Sand Dollar Stables.
The Hot Pink Stable and Skychai Racing-bred has won three of his six starts with his other three runs all top three finishes – including two thirds at the graded stakes level.
Fancy Liquor comes from a tough family with his dam winning 21 times and his fellow stakes winning relative Joy of Brand winning seven times.
Fancy Liquor is one of 57 stakes winners for the top value sire in Kentucky with Lookin At Lucky siring six winners in 2020 alone. Lookin At Lucky’s runners are led by multiple Grade I winner Accelerate and last year’s Grade I Kentucky Derby winner Country House.
