Grade Three Win for Breaking Lucky
Talented entire Breaking Lucky (4h Lookin at Lucky x Shooting Party, by Sky Classic) was in top form at Woodbine on Monday to win the $168,600 Grade III Seagram Cup.
Prepared by Reade Baker, Breaking Lucky won the $500,000 Prince of Wales Stakes last year and has been consistent this year, albeit winless in recent runs.
He travelled well for Luis Contreras and found the line strongly to win the 1 and 1/16th mile contest by three quarters of a length.
“I was happy the whole way, I just stayed behind the speed and [trainer] Reade [Baker] told me to let him kick before everyone else started to make their move,” said Contreras.
“We did and we got the win. [Are You Kidding Me] was very game the whole stretch, but I knew I had a lot of power underneath me.”
Bred at Ontario in Canada by Christine Hayden, Breaking Lucky was a $100,000 Keeneland November weanling purchase and runs for Gunpowder Farms. From 13 starts, he has three wins and six placings with prizemoney topping $485,000.
Breaking Lucky is the best of four winners from Grade I placed Shooting Party.
He is one of 11 stakes-winners for Lookin at Lucky, who has sired a string of smart recent winners including Grand Nenuco (Gulfstream), Eden Ridge (Saratoga), Accelerate (Del Mar) and Lucky Bryan (Del Mar).
