Korean Double For Competitive Edge
Already off to a brilliant start in 2020, sophomore sire Competitive Edge impressed on Friday when Barbarian (3c Competitive Edge x White Haven, by Unbridled’s Song) and Adele Spike (3f Competitive Edge x Ice Curlin, by Curlin) provided him his second double of the week with wins at Busan in South Korea.
Making his second start at 6½ furlongs less than a month after finishing second on debut, Barbarian was ready to avenge that loss and always looked a winner. He disputed the pace right out of the gate before taking a slight lead under Lee Hyo Sik into the turn. It was obvious he had plenty of run left with his jockey sitting quiet until they hit the stretch. It took just a bit of hand urging to switch the colt into a second gear.
Barbarian was green throughout the stretch but once he focused in the final sixteenth of a mile, he ran away from the field to win by eight lengths for trainer Bang Dong Suk and owner Lee Won Tae.
Korean-bred Barbarian’s dam White Haven was bought carrying the colt from the Keeneland November Sale. A winner on the track, White Haven is the dam of three winners from four to race and is a half-sister to the dam of Listed winner and Grade I-placed Room For Me and Listed winning Uncle B.
Later on the card, Competitive Edge’s Adele Spike won her second straight race and third overall when cutting back to five furlongs.
The 3-year-old filly followed her successful trend of going straight to the lead, though she had to deal with a challenge throughout the run. It wasn’t until the final furlong that she was able to start pulling away and win by half-length under jockey Francisco Da Silva.
Trained by Baik Kwang Yeol for Jangyun Lee, the filly has finished in the top three in five of her seven starts. The first winner in 2020 for Competitive Edge, the filly was born in South Korea after her dam was purchased carrying the filly in 2016.
With 32 winners, Competitive Edge has more winners than any other stallion in his class after finishing among the leading freshmen in 2019.
