Maybellene (Lookin At Luck) winning The Sunland Park Oaks

Lucky Filly Wins Sunland Oaks

Lookin At Lucky has had a string of recent smart winners and upped the ante with a new stakes-winner when promising filly Maybellene (3f Lookin At Lucky x Greathearted, by Giant’s Causeway) collected the $200,240 Sunland Park Oaks at the weekend. The Bob Baffert trained filly was actually second across the line behind her stablemate Callback, who was subsequently disqualified due to causing interference with Maybellene (pictured on left) promoted for the win. Second in the 1 and 1/16th mile contest was Scat Means Go (3f Scat Daddy x Shenandoah Valley, by Proud Citizen) to give Coolmore sires the quinella. “Maybellene ran very well and with Callback, it was unfortunate she ducked in,” said Baffert assistant Jimmy Barnes. “Maybellene ran the race that she ran at Los Alamitos [when a good third in the GI Starlet S.], so we were glad to see her show up today.” A $140,000 Keeneland September yearling, Maybellene is from Greathearted, an unraced half-sister to Grade II winner Rossini and Grade III winner and sire Elusive Quality. With three wins and three placings from 10 starts and prizemoney topping $276,000, Maybellene is the fifth stakes-winner for Lookin At Lucky.
