Mare In Foal to Lookin At Lucky Tops Session Eight Broodmares
A stakes producing mare in foal to Lookin At Lucky was the most expensive broodmare of the eighth session at Keeneland’s November Breeding Stock Sale on Wednesday when a prolonged bidding war saw Magical Ride sell for $170,000 to Empire Thoroughbreds as Agent.
The dam of Grade I Preakness Stakes runner-up Ride On Curlin and Listed winner Space Mountain, Magical Ride is the dam of seven winners from eight to race and was consigned by Lane’s End Farm as Agent. She is carrying a foal by two-time Champion Lookin At Lucky on a February 22 cover.
A proven Grade II-placed runner herself, Magical Ride is the best runner by Grade I winner Victory Ride. Victory Ride is a half-sister to fellow Grade I winner River Flyer with 23 stakes horses under Magical Ride’s first three dams.
"She links some of the best horses from the 19th and 20th centuries," Empire Thoroughbreds’ Finn Green told Blood-Horse. "I'm a sap for majestic jewels like her. She's a great-granddaughter of Northern Dancer, then you have her producing Grade I horses back through Mr. Prospector's son Smart Strike and Curlin. She's in foal to another line of that same family with Lookin At Lucky."
Lookin At Lucky bred to mares by Magical Ride’s sire Storm Cat has produced nine winners led by Grade III winners Lucky Player and Dr. Edgar, stakes winner Try Your Luck, and Grade III placed You Missed It.
A Champion 2- and 3-year-old, Lookin At Lucky is the sire of 51 stakes winners including 13 Grade/Group I winners.
