Mo Mosa Romps in G3 Steve Sexton
It was a second straight stakes victory for Mo Mosa (4c Uncle Mo x Roughing, by Eskendereya) on Monday night when the runner romped in the rain in the Grade III Steve Sexton Mile.
Rain showers throughout the afternoon disrupted the card but Mo Mosa had no concerns while lining up for the one mile dirt race at Lone Star Park. Breaking well, Mo Mosa was happy to race a few paths off the rail in third under Ramon Vazquez. As Grade I winning sprinter C Z Rocket made his move from second, Mo Mosa followed his lead and the pair hooked up.
That duel didn’t last long with C Z yielding easily and Mo Mosa galloping away from the field to win by 3 ½ lengths over that rival for owner-breeders Perry and Denis Martin. It ended a good weekend for Uncle Mo who saw daughter Envoutante romp in a Churchill Downs stakes on Saturday.
It was the fourth career victory in 16 starts for the Mike Maker-trained Mo Mosa with seven other on-the-board finishes. The colt has only finished worse than second once in his five starts this year.
Mo Mosa is out of a half-sister to Grade I winner Diplomat Lady and the dam of Fastnet Rock’s Group II winner Zululand. Others out of Roughing’s half-sisters also include the dam of Grade I winner Hunter O’Riley.
Uncle Mo’s nine stakes horses in 2021 are led by graded stakes winners Mo Mosa and Modernist with the winners coming from both his 2017 and 2018 crops.
