Munnings' Sun Path Continues Family Tradition
Sun Path (2f Munnings x Touch The Star, by Tapit) kept a winning tradition between Munnings and Touch The Star alive with a three length Maiden Special Weight victory at Churchill Downs on Sunday.
The full sister to Munnings’ Grade II winner Bonny South enjoyed the trip over seven furlongs on dirt, racing in midpack early on. Racing into the turn, Sun Path made a huge move to challenge the leaders and entered the stretch in control of the pace.
From there, the Brad Cox-trained filly extended her lead to win by three lengths with Florent Geroux aboard.
Second in her debut last month to Air Force Blue’s Off We Go, the Juddmonte Farms homebred has followed a similar route to her sister with a maiden breaking win in her second start.
The third winner in as many starters for Touch The Star, the full sister to Grade II winner and Grade I-placed Bonny South is out of a half-sister to Group I winner Etoile Montante, who is also the dam of Grade II winner Starformer. Also under Sun Path’s second dam is Grade III winners Glaswegian and Country Grammer.
Sun Path also has a yearling full brother named Star Alignment.
Munnings has had an excellent year in 2020 with 20 stakes horses and 10 stakes winners, led by five graded stakes winners, including a trio of Grade II winners.
