Orazio Leads Home Caravaggio 1-2 at Windsor
Caravaggio extended his lead over other North American freshmen on Saturday when an exacta led home by Orazio (2c Caravaggio x Lady Fashion, by Oasis Dream) give him his eighth winner.
Racing over six furlongs on the Windsor turf in England, Orazio raced in about fourth as the leader shot a few lengths ahead. The gray made his way closer to the pacesetter inside the final two furlongs and had the lead by the time they passed the furlong marker pole to pull away from there.
Orazio wasn’t for catching with a three length win but fellow Caravaggio runner City Runner was the best of the rest when finishing second, 1 ½ lengths ahead of the third place finisher.
Trained by Charlie Hills for Susan Roy, the colt was bred by Glenvale Stud and Edgeridge Ltd. Orazio was a £215,000 yearling at last year’s Goffs Orby Yearling Sale when purchased by Michael Roy.
Orazio is a half-brother to Listed Chesham Stakes winner Suits You with Orazio’s half-sister’s Wootton Bassett son Great Max finishing third in the same race this year. Their dam Lady Fashion has produced five winners from five named foals and is out of the multiple stakes placed Carinae.
Three of Orazio’s first four dams are stakes producers with only his stakes-placed second dam not among that group – however, she has produced six winners from eight to race.
Lady Fashion also has a yearling Caravaggio filly to come.
Caravaggio leads all North American first crop sires by winners with eight – three more than the next freshman. He is also one of only two North American freshmen with a stakes winner this season and one of just four Northern Hemisphere freshman stallions with at least one blacktype performer. He also sits third by winners among all Northern Hemisphere freshmen.
