Pete’s Play Call Newest Stakes Winner for Munnings
Evergreen Munnings gelding Pete’s Play Call (7g Munnings x Taft Lil Queen, by Irish Open) earned a well-deserved first stakes victory on Saturday when winning the Bonapaw Stakes at Fair Grounds.
Running over 5½ furlongs on dirt, Pete’s Play Call settled in third as the pacesetters dueled a length ahead of him down the backstretch. Over a sloppy track, Pete’s Play Call made his move in the stretch to easily take the lead. While one rival tried to chase him down in the final furlong, it did no good with Michael Hui, Hooties Racing LLC, and WSS Racing-owend Pete’s Play Call earning his ninth career victory by 2½ lengths.
Trained by Mike Maker, the gelding took his earnings above $400,000 for his first stakes victory.
A $90,000 yearling from the Brookdale Sales consignment at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale in 2014, Pete’s Play Call was bred in Maryland by Mr. and Mrs. Charles McGinnes. He is the third stakes winner for his dam Taft Lil Queen, who is also the granddam of Grade I winner Constellation and Listed winner Kiss The Daddy in addition to three other stakes horses.
A value sire, Munnings has now sired 36 stakes winners and 56 stakes horses.
