Scat Daddy Goes Out With a Bang

The last crop of yearlings by ill-fated Scat Daddy lit up the sale ring at the 2017 Keeneland September Yearling Sale this week with 42 youngsters selling in Book One and Two at an average $366,071, his success a potent reminder as to the potential of his sire sons such as Grade I winner No Nay Never.

Top sellers for Scat Daddy were a colt from Orchard Beach that fetched $1.1 million and a filly from Beloveda that made $1 million.

The colt was consigned by Anderson Farms and bought by MV Magnier. “It was a lot of money but sadly, we lost Scat Daddy a couple years ago,” Magnier said “It’s probably one of the biggest losses we’ll ever experience. We’re looking to have (the 3-year-old Group 1-winning Scat Daddy colt) Caravaggio to follow in his footsteps.” The $1 million filly from Beloveda was bought by Kerry Radcliffe Bloodstock, who also purchased the next highest priced of his offspring, a colt from Miss Lamour for $950,000. “This was my favorite horse in the whole sale,” Radcliffe said. “I saw her on Sunday and I knew I wasn’t going home without her. In my eyes, she is the best horse in the sale. She is a queen and hopefully she will be in the Queen Mary Stakes (G2 at Royal Ascot) next year.”
