Uncle Mo Colt Upsets Favourite

The $150,000 TVGCom Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth on Sunday was supposed to be an easy target for Maximum Security, who was disqualified after winning the Kentucky Derby last month, but progressive colt King For a Day (3c Uncle Mo x Youbetwereven, by French Deputy) had other ideas.

Maximum Security was having his first start since the Derby and stumbled a little from the gate. He recovered to take up a position and was in front turning for home, but the Todd Pletcher trained King for a Day was tenacious to the line and scored a length win over the favourite in the 1 and 1/16th mile contest.

“He was in full control the whole race,” said winning rider Joe Bravo.

“Maximum Security stumbled the first couple of jumps and I am sure that hurt him a little bit and he was playing catch-up the rest of the time - even though he was in front until we got to him late. I just tried to keep my horse relaxed and ride my horse. He was good when he needed to be.”

A homebred for Red Oak Stable, King For a Day has the overall record of three wins from five starts with earnings in excess of $210,000.

He is a half-brother to stakes-winners Ima Jersey Girl and Feel That Fire the dam of Grade I Saratoga Hopeful Stakes winner Mind Control.
