Viejos Tiempos 17th Group I Winner For Lucky
Lookin At Lucky recorded his 17th top level winner on Sunday when Viejos Tiempos (3c Lookin At Lucky x Afirmate Catalina, by Special Quest) won the Group I Clasico Club Hipico de Santiago Falabella in Chile.
The 1 ¼ mile turf race saw the winner break strongly before taking back to race in midpack with the field spread out over more than 10 lengths. As the field turned into the stretch, Viejos Tiempos had work to do and was angled to the outside to have clear running room for his charge.
The 3-year-old made steady progress during the first part of his march toward the front but soon was in full stride and in a blink was drawing even with the leader. His challenge didn’t last long with his rival quickly conceding the lead.
From there, Viejos Tiempos pulled away to a 2 ¾ length victory with fellow Lookin At Lucky runner Nenufar Azul in third. The victory earned Viejos Tiempos an automatic berth into the Grade I Breeders’ Cup Mile in November.
Bred by Haras Don Alberto, Viejos Tiempos is trained by Patrick Baeza A. for Don Gato.
He is the second Group 1 winner for Afirmate Catalina, who is also the dam of Chilean champion Vamo A Galupiar with the family including three other stakes performers from eight winners.
Afirmate Catalina herself was a winner on the track and is a half-sister to Chilean champion Caserta Mia and Group I winner Cambridge with a winning half-sister also producing Group I winner Cascada Surena.
In addition to being Lookin At Lucky’s 17th Grade I winner, Viejos Tiempos is also his sire’s 67th worldwide stakes winner and 43rd graded stakes winner. In all, Lookin At Lucky is the sire of 125 blacktype horses.
