Vulcan Flies Again at Indiana Grand

Munnings’ impressive maiden winner Vulcan (2c Munnings x Bert’s Altarcation, by Bertrando) put on an even more impressive showing in an Indiana Grand Allowance on Thursday.

Racing over 5½ furlongs, Vulcan raced outside horses early on but quickly put distance between himself and everyone but the runaway leader. Racing as the favorite, Vulcan made his move in the turn to first catch the leader then pass him. By the time the field entered the stretch, Vulcan had the lead and was quickly pulling away.

Vulcan gave every indication there is much more to come as he made easy work of the field with a 6¼ length romp under Fernando De La Cruz.

Trained by Brad Cox for Steve Landers Racing, it was Vulcan’s second straight win in his three career starts. The Emily and Oliver Bushnell-bred colt was a $120,000 purchase by BSW Bloodstock from the Lane’s End consignment at last year’s Fasig-Tipton July Sale.

One of two winners from three to race out of Bert’s Altarcation, Vulcan’s granddam is a half-sister to Grade II winner Horse Greeley. The pair is out of multiple Grade I-placed Chile Chatte, who herself is out of dual Grade I winner and top broodmare Carita Tostada.

Value sire Munnings is having another tremendous year with the stallion among the leading sires of 3-year-olds by graded stakes winners and in the top 10 on the General Sire lists, with his runners led by Grade II winner and Kentucky Oaks contender Bonny South.
