Starspangledbanner 2YO Wins G3 Breeders Stakes
Starspangledbanner returns to the Hunter Valley this spring and posted a timely new stakes-winner on Saturday when classy filly Treasurway (2f Starspangledbanner x Miss Toorak Flyer, by Toorak Toff) broke her maiden in the Group III SAJC Breeders Stakes (1200m).
Bred by Rosemont Stud in partnership and retained to race, Treasurway has been overdue for a win having placed at all five previous starts including a couple of stakes races and the $1million VOBIS Showdown.
Trained by Jason Warren and ridden by Craig Williams, Treasurway cast off maiden status with a three-quarter length win over the Godolphin colt Heuristic.
“She really deserved it. It was tradesman-like at the end of the prep," Jason Warren said.
"She had five runs coming here today, and we were bold enough to put her on the truck and ask her for one more.
"She did the job and has earned a break.
"We had a good chat with Anthony Mithen and felt they are two very nice fillies (Legacies and Treasurway), and it was pointless running them against each other at Sandown. I said that I was happy to take this girl here, and it gave Rosemont a chance to win two black-type races in the space of five minutes.”
Treasurway will head for a spell with five placings and a win from six starts and prizemoney in excess of $210,000.
"I feel this filly will get a mile. She settles well, has a big finish, and when we stretch her out, we will have a bit of fun with her,” Warren added.
"She is deep into her prep, and we will give her a good break. She might miss the first part of the spring.”
Treasurway is the first winner for Miss Toorak Flyer, a winning Toorak Toff mare from a half-sister to stakes-winner Secret Flyer.
Treasurway is the 29th stakes-winner for Starspangledbanner, who stands this spring at a fee of $33,000.
