Consistent Son Of Leading Light Lands Maiden Hurdle
Tuesday saw the Charles Byrnes-trained Light Brigade (5g Leading Light - Poetics Girl, by Saddlers Hall) build on some promising performances to justify favoritism in the maiden hurdle at Fairyhouse.
Placed in two bumpers, he looked the likely winner on his hurdle debut before falling at the last and was last seen finishing fourth in a similar contest at Limerick. It looked like the bay might be without luck once again turning for home, as he was caught in a pocket of horses, but he quickened when asked approaching the final flight and soon led. Pushed out, he held off a late challenge by Purdey’s Gift to win by half a length under Kevin Brouder.
Owned by F McCarthy and bred by Niall Flynn, Light Brigade hails from the first crop of Grange Stud sire Leading Light. The Classic-winning son of Montjeu is also responsible for fellow maiden hurdle winner Game Socks and smart four-year-old point-to-point winner Kilbarry Leader, amongst others.
