Mahler colt wins show
A colt from the first crop of Coolmore National Hunt sire Mahler consigned by Deerpark Stables won the Kenneth Oliver Memorial Foal Show at Doncaster before selling for £24,000 yesterday. Given that Vere Phillips co-judged the show class with John Bleahan, it was no surprise that he pursued the June-born colt but he had to give best to Tim Hyde jnr, who signed in the name of Summerhill.
Pictured presenting the prize is Rhona Oliver, wife of the late Kenneth Oliver and Declan Dorgan of Deerpark Stud.
A son of Galileo, sire of no less than seven individual Group 1 winners in 2010, Mahler won the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot before running second in the St. Leger (beaten a length) at Doncaster and third in the Melbourne Cup (despite still being a three-year-old).
