Monbeg is Thyestes hero for Milan
Monbeg Notorious (7g Milan-Borleagh Princess, by Presenting) ran out an 11-length winner of the Goffs Thyestes Handicap Chase at Gowran Park on Thursday in the colours of Gigginstown House Stud.
The son of Milan was sent off a well-backed 7/2 favourite for Gowran’s feature chase of the year, hitting the front two fences from home and scoring with ease under Jack Kennedy on testing underfoot conditions.
A point-to-point, bumper and hurdle winner, he had only won a beginners’ chase on December 31 and trainer Gordon Elliott is hoping the seven-year-old will develop into a high-class staying chaser
“He jumped fences like they were on fire at Punchestown the last day,” said Elliott. “Jack was brilliant again and gave him a great ride. We’ll get him home and see but maybe something like the Irish National is what he'll run in. To be honest I'm not sure if the ground is important but he probably would be more effective on soft ground.”
Bred by Malachy McDaniel-Stone, Monbeg Notorious was bought for £155,000 by Elliott at Cheltenham sales in May 2015.
