Promising Westerner Mare Gains Deserved Maiden Win
Carrig Kate (5m Westerner - Carrig Millie, by Milan) carried the colours of breeder Maurice Sheehy to success in the mares’ maiden at Portrush on Saturday.
The Peter Croke-trained mare had finished in the first four on all of her previous starts and was reunited with Brian Lawless to win on the fourth attempt. Improving from three out, she was travelling best of the field when leading at the second last and kept on well to score by seven lengths.
The daughter of Westerner was bred by Sheehy out of useful chaser Carrig Millie (Milan).
