Smart Son Of Getaway Delivers On Stable Debut

Backmersackme (5g Getaway – Princess Dante, by Scorpion) made a successful start for Emmet Mullins when justifying favouritism in Monday’s point-to-point flat race at Cork.

The Getaway gelding joined Mullins following his debut win in a four-year-old maiden for Michael Griffin, and donned Paul Byrne’s colours for the first time at Cork. Settled towards the back of the field by John Gleeson, he improved into midfield from halfway and eased into a prominent position with three furlongs left to race. Shaken up to lead approaching the final furlong, he was pushed out to win by three lengths and three quarters.

Speaking after the race, the winning trainer said, “I was taken by his win in the point-to-point as he was the only one from the group to bridge the gap and galloped through the line, and did the same today. John said he was very green today and should come on again from it.”

Backmersackme was bred by Brian Doran out of Princess Dante, whose four-year-old by Order Of St George is in training with Sean Doyle.

At Chepstow earlier that afternoon, the Kim Bailey-trained Magical Escape (6g Getaway – Chestnut, by Presenting) relished a step up in trip in the maiden hurdle.

Racing just short of three miles, the bay tracked the leader under Ciaran Gethings and led from four out. Ridden when joined before the second last, he asserted soon after and stayed on well from the final flight to win by nine and a half lengths.
