Kerryhill (Soldier Of Fortune) Wins The Grade 2 River Don Hurdle at Doncaster

Soldier Of Fortune Gelding Proves Cut Above In Grade 2 Hurdle

Kerryhill (6g Soldier Of Fortune – Highland Flower, by Oscar) showed his class when taking the Grade 2 River Don Novices’ Hurdle at Doncaster on Saturday.

The Soldier Of Fortune gelding fetched £115,000 following his maiden win for Colin McKeever and beat the well-regarded Cadell (Mahler) on his first start for Ruth Jefferson in November. Fourth in a Grade 2 at Cheltenham next time out, he appeared better-suited to Saturday’s flatter track and better ground, as he led with ease before two out. Shaken up soon after, he showed signs of inexperience approaching the final flight, before being ridden out to score by seven and a half lengths under Brian Hughes.

The winning trainer later revealed that Kerryhill will be aimed at Aintree, as opposed to Cheltenham. Bred by Mrs Deborah Hobson, the son of Soldier Of Fortune was one of four Graded winners by Coolmore NH sires on Saturday.
