Son Of Mahler Digs Deep For Listed Win
Sunday saw Captains Nephew (7g Mahler – Drumbug, by Germany) gain his first black-type success in the Listed Novice Handicap Chase at Fairyhouse.
The Philip Rothwell-trained chesnut was ridden prominently by James O’Sullivan and was travelling well when asserting before the second last. He dug deep when challenged on the run-in to win by half a length, with the front pair finishing over 30 lengths clear of the rest of the field.
“He was good and tough,” the winning rider said. “I got a dream run around. He jumped from fence to fence.”
Captains Nephew is owned by Tom Doran, having been purchased privately from Cormac Doyle following a narrow defeat on debut at Tinahely. The son of Mahler becomes the first black-type winner bred by Brendan Nolan out of Drumbug.
