Son Of Westerner Impresses In Beginners Chase

The Cathal Don (5g Westerner - Flying Answer, by Anshan) ran out an impressive winner on his second start over fences in Sunday’s Beginners Chase at Tipperary.

Previously a winner and twice placed over hurdles, Henry De Bromhead’s charge finished a promising third on his chase debut last month. Ridden to chase the leaders by Sean Flanagan, he improved into second after the third last and was pushed along to lead at the penultimate fence. Racing clear on the run-in, he scored by eight and a half lengths, with another 15 lengths back to the third.

Speaking after the race, the winning trainer said, “I'm delighted for Richard Frayne who let me go chasing with him - I just hoped he'd improve for a fence and it looks like he has.”

Bred by Mrs BD Byrne, The Cathal Don is a half-brother to Graded performer The Mighty Don.
