Westerner Mare Shows Winning Attitude To Gain Maiden Win
Western Fiona (5m Westerner - Lindas Last, by Bach) showed an admirable attitude to win Sunday’s Mares Maiden at Ballyvodock in the colours of her handler, Sam Curling.
Leading the field under Pa King, the bay was hampered by a loose horse approaching four out, but remained undeterred to lead after the third last. In command on the flat, she won by a length and three quarters on the line.
Sunday marked a fine improvement on a promising fourth on debut last month and sees her become the first winner bred by MJ Leahy out of the mare. Her sire Westerner has enjoyed a successful season to date, with high-profile winners including last month’s Thyestes victor Total Recall. The multiple Group 1 winner commands €6,000 at Castlehyde Stud this season.
