Westerner Mare Transfers Talent To Chasing
Smart hurdler Western Victory (7m Westerner - Zara’s Victory, by Old Vic) gained her first win over fences when justifying favouritism at Roscommon on Monday.
A Listed winner and Grade 3 placed over hurdles, the Declan Queally-trained mare was having just her second start over fences in the Mares Beginners Chase over two miles and an extended five furlongs. Sean O’Keeffe rode the bay to make all, his mount jumping well throughout and asserted after the second last. She won by 13 lengths with ease.
Speaking after the race, the winning rider said, “She was good. She settled well in front and jumped well and picked up well up the straight. I was always confident.”
Owned by S O’Neill and bred by Tim Conroy, Western Victory is one of two black-type winners out of the mare Zara’s Victory.
