Harvest Moon Newest Smart Winner for Uncle Mo

Harvest Moon (3f Uncle Mo x Qaraaba, by Shamardal) led home a Coolmore-sired 1-2 on Friday when breaking her maiden at Los Alamitos in her second start.

Going off as the race favorite when switching to a mile on the dirt from racing on turf in her debut, Harvest Moon broke on top before settling in second and pressuring the leader every step of the way. Going into the far turn, the filly drew even with the leader then took the lead to hold a length advantage into the stretch under Flavien Prat.

Extending her lead extended in early stretch, she was eased down in the final sixteenth of a mile to coast home. While there was no threat to the winner’s victory, American Pharoah’s My Happy Girl made a late run to close the lead down to 1 ½ lengths at the line and finish second.

Trained by Simon Callaghan for owner-breeder Alice Bamford and co-owner Michael Tabor, Harvest Moon is the third foal out of Grade III winner Qaraaba and a half-sister to Grade II winner and Grade I-placed Californiagoldrush.

Harvest Moon’s fourth dam is Grade I Irish Derby winner Salsabil, a daughter of Grade II winner and bluehen mare Flame of Tara – also the dam of Group I winner and Epsom Derby placed Marju.

Qaraaba also has an unnamed Munnings 2-year-old colt to come.

Uncle Mo is the sire of 119 worldwide winners in 2020, including six stakes winners and 15 stakes horses led by Grade II winners Modernist, King Guillermo, and Bast.
