Pure Steel Wins The Maiden Hurdle At Cork

Promising Son Of Yeats Lands Maiden Hurdle

Four-year-old maiden winner Pure Steel (5g Yeats – Beaus Polly, by Presenting) got off the mark under rules when justifying favouritism in Friday’s maiden hurdle at Cork.

After justifying favouritism on his sole start for Derek O’Connor, the JP McManus-owned bay was transferred to Jimmy Mangan, for whom he finished fourth on his rules debut last month. He made all of the running on Friday and was travelling well when challenged at the third last. Ridden approaching the final flight, he ran on well to score by a length and three quarters, with another eight lengths back to the third.

Speaking after the race, Jimmy Mangan said: “Mark (Walsh) said he wants further and he needs a bit of time as well. He jumped the roadway at one stage so is still a young green horse.

“The trainer of the second horse says he is going for the Fred Winter (Hurdle at Cheltenham) so more power to him and we’ll probably head to either Naas or Navan next as they are the two tracks which would suit him.”

The promising son of Yeats was bred by Margaret Vaughan.
