Rips are all the rage at sales

He was an outstanding racehorse and buyers at the recent top-level yearling sales believe that Rip Van Winkle is going to make an equally high-class stallion following some eye-catching prices.

At last week’s Tattersalls Book 1 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, David Redvers – acting for Sheikh Fahad Al Thani and family’s Qatar Racing – paid 400,000gns for a Rip Van Winkle colt offered by Highclere Stud for Rick Barnes’ Grangecon Stud.

The blue-blooded youngster is a sibling to G1 Canadian International heroine Sarah Lynx (by Montjeu).

At the same sale, M V Magnier paid 300,000gns for a colt out of the Danehill mare Yaria while the young Rips were also in demand at Goffs and Deauville.

At Goffs, Jamie McCalmont paid 280,000 euros for a colt out of a half-sister to Owington, and the agent was full of praise for the stallion.

“Of all the first-crop sires I think Rip Van Winkle is the most exciting,” said McCalmont. “He’s getting fantastic-looking stock and this colt is a very good sort.”

At Deauville, Peter and Ross Doyle paid 240,000 euros for a Rip Van Winkle colt and the brilliant son of Galileo has so far had 10 yearlings sell for 110,000 euros or more.
