Expect to hear plenty more about two-year-olds Palenville (2f Rip Van Winkle-Faithful Duchess, by Bachelor Duke) and Spanish Romance (2f Rip Van Winkle-Utr, by Mr Prospector) after the pair completed a cross-Channel double for Rip Van Winkle on Friday.
Palenville, trained by Richard Hannon for Julie Wood, lined up in a Newmarket maiden full of blue-bloods and stepped up on her debut at Ascot seven days earlier to score by a length and a quarter under Cam Hardie.
“I kept straight early from stall one and then came across and Palenville kept on well. She has improved for her debut,” said Hardie of the filly, who was bred by Ruskerne Ltd.
Spanish Romance (pictured) was scoring for the second time when comfortably winning a conditions event at Chantilly under Cristian Demuro.
The Eoghan O’Neill-trained filly, who was bred by Brid Cosgrove, had been bought privately by Team Valor after winning by five lengths on her debut last month and connections are looking towards the G3 Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot with her.
“It wasn’t easy for her because she was the only filly in the race,” O’Neill told JDG. “I have thought she was bit out of the ordinary since February. I think she is better than Broox (winner of the G3 Prix d’Arenberg) because she is so strong mentally. She’s very calm at home.
“She’s the second horse I have had for Team Valor and they bought her after her first win – they are always on the lookout for a good horse. At the moment she is being aimed at the G3 Albany Stakes.”
