$525,000 Mendelssohn Filly on Top at OBS March

It was an excellent start to the OBS March Two-Year-Olds In Training Sale for the highly credentialed Mendelssohn on Tuesday when his daughter out of Simply Confection was the most expensive filly of the day with a $525,000 price tag.

Purchased by Gracie Bloodstock from the Niall Brennan Stables consignment, the half-sister to Grade II Fountain of Youth winner Simplification showed off her own talent last week when breezing in :10.0. She is the second foal out of the stakes placed Simply Confection, who herself is out of a full sister to dual champion Ashado.

Simply Confection is one of two stakes producers for her dam with one of her half-sisters producing the stakes winning Inflexibility and Halo Again.

“She is a very nice filly and worked very well,” Chris Gracie told Thoroughbred Daily News. “She has a very nice female family–she's half to a very good horse.”

Mendelssohn is a young sire Gracie is keeping an eye with the bloodstock agent saying the filly will now go back to the buyer’s farm.

“Mendelssohn looks like he could be a very nice stallion. He's definitely got the credentials to be a very good stallion. We're looking forward to having one by him.”

The $525,000 filly was just one impressive price for one of Mendelssohn’s first juveniles with a colt out of Tipping Point bringing $350,000 from Corbin Blumberg for North Star Racing.

Consigned by Woodford Thoroughbreds, that :10.0 breezer is a half-brother to the stakes winning Blame J D and three other winners from four to race out of their dam. Each of the colt’s dams on the page are either stakes performers or producers with his third dam both.

The opening session also saw Dennis O’Neill purchase the colt out of Shannon Faith for $200,000. Mendelssohn has eight more scheduled to go through the ring on Wednesday.
