Mendelssohn Back To Stables

$900,000 Filly Leads Way for Mendelssohn During Wednesday’s Session

Mendelssohn continued to show buyers’ confidence in his stock on Wednesday when his 13 sold were led by a $900,000 filly, the most expensive filly and fourth most expensive offering overall of the day.

Purchased by Solis and Litt, the Gainesway consigned filly is out of a half-sister to champion Covfefe. Covfefe herself is by Mendelssohn’s half-brother Into Mischief, making this offering closely related to the Champion 3-Year-Old Filly and Champion Female Sprinter. Also among the filly’s dam’s half-siblings is Group II winner and Group I-placed Albiano and stakes-placed Going Day, who produced stakes-placed Daylight Ride.

A great-granddaughter of stakes winner Aurora, champion Festival of Light and Grade I winners Acoma and Arch are also on the page of the Alexander-Groves Thoroughbreds-bred yearling. Acrobatique visited American Pharoah last year.

"She is a lovely filly, great page. Mendelssohn is very nice; she is the whole package," Alex Solis told Blood-Horse. "Helen (Alexander) raises a great horse, and we are very excited to have her."

Stonehaven Steadings had a spectacular day with Coolmore America stallions. The consignment saw B.B.E. buy a $750,000 Mendelssohn filly only minutes after they sold a $1.55 million Justify colt.

Bred by Bart Evans and Stonehaven Steadings, the colt is out of multiple Grade II winner and Grade I-placed Wasted Tears, who has already produced stakes-placed Coffee Crush. In all, Wasted Tears is the dam of six winners from six to race with her colt Corniche earning TDN Rising Star honors for a 4 ½ length debut victory earlier this month.

“It was probably the most exciting thing I have experienced in this business,” Stonehaven Steadings' Aidan O'Meara told Thoroughbred Daily News. “We are excited for everybody on the [farm and sales] team. It is a credit to them and their horsemanship. It might be one of the best crews in Kentucky for a farm of our size.”

Wasted Tears is out of the stakes winning Wishes And Roses, whose own five winners include three stakes winners with each of this filly’s three dams listed on the page both winning stakes and producing stakes performers.

Averaging $296,154 with a median of $230,000, Mendelssohn’s Session 3 average was the 10th best of any stallion with three or more sold and fourth best of any freshman stallion with two or more sold.

His yearlings on Wednesday also sold for $320,000, $310,000, $275,000, $240,000, $230,000, etc.
