Ah Jeez Scores Second Win at Del Mar
It was a second win for Ah Jeez (2c Mendelssohn x Poetic, by Violence) on Friday at Del Mar when the colt raced to a 1 ¼ length victory.
Covering five furlongs on the turf, Ah Jeez sat just over two lengths off the leader early on in the tightly packed field after having to be steadied. The colt regained his stride and took up a place on the rail down the backstretch and stayed there until they entered the stretch and John Velazquez guided him to the outside.
It was at that point that Ah Jeez started to chase down the top pair and with a sixteenth left took over the lead. He pulled away from there to win by 1 ¼ lengths for owner Mark Davis and trainer Doug O’Neill.
Finishing on the board in half his starts, Ah Jeez was bred in Kentucky by Machmer Hall and was fourth in a Grade III at Del Mar over the summer.
The colt is one of 18 winners for Mendelssohn, a spot that has his sire fifth among all freshmen. Mendelssohn’s five stakes performers are led by the graded stakes winner Delight.
