Alda (2f Munnings x Soldata, by Maria’s Mon) became Munnings’ first juvenile stakes winner of the year on Sunday when taking home the Catch A Glimpse Stakes at Woodbine.
Breaking her maiden at Belmont Park last out, trainer Graham Motion made the choice to send Alda to Canada for her stakes debut over 6½ furlongs on the turf. Breaking well, Alda immediately settled into the back of the field where she would spend most of the race.
Jockey Steven Ronald Bahen kept the filly on the rail throughout with Alda sliding up the rail half-way down the stretch. As the hole she was eyeing closed, Bahen piloted her to the outside and the filly was able to show her turn of foot.
Alda got up just in time to force a photo and win by a nose for her second win in three starts.
The win came just half an hour before Pete’s Play Call (7g Munnings x Taft Lil Queen, by Irish Open) won at Saratoga to give Munnings a quick cross-border double.
A Wertheimer and Frere homebred, Alda is out of the winning mare Soldata. That mare is the dam of four winners, including Group II winner Alignment. She is also a full sister to multiple graded stakes winner Exhi and a half sister to stakes winner Diluvien.
Alda’s fourth dam is Canadian Horse of the Year and bluehen mare Fanfreluche, whose influence has continues to be felt around the world.
A leading sire of 2-year-olds year after year, Munnings is the sire of 15 2-year-old stakes winners and 26 juvenile stakes horses led by Grade II winner Finite and Grade III winner No Problem.
