Alla Breve Leads Home Mendelssohn Exacta
Alla Breve (2f Mendelssohn x Split It, by Curlin) made a big impression on debut Friday when the filly led home a Coolmore-sired trifecta in a Laurel Park Maiden Special Weight.
Slow off in the 5 ½ furlong turf race, the filly raced nearly 10 lengths behind the leader with just a few horses beat. Alla Breve started to make her move around the turn and entered the stretch six paths wide, showing a big turn of foot to beat fellow Mendelssohn runner Opus Forty Two home by three quarters of a length with Munnings’ L Street Lady in third a neck behind the second place runner.
Alla Breve is trained by Michael Matz for Runnymore Racing and was bred by Sycamore Hall Thoroughbreds.
The filly is one of three winners from three to race out of two-time winner Split It. That mare is a half-sister to Grade III winner Shared Property and stakes winner Whiskey Romeo with two other half-sisters producing stakes performers.
This is also the family of Grade I winner Epitome, multiple graded stakes winner War Story and Grade II winner Land Over Sea.
Mendelssohn’s 18 winners is fourth best among all freshmen with his five stakes performers led by Grade II winner and Breeders’ Cup contender Delight.
