Amanda’s Folly Newest Stakes Winner for Mendelssohn
It was a new stakes winner for Mendelssohn on Sunday when daughter Amanda’s Folly (3f Mendelssohn x Privacy, by Notebook) raced to victory in the Ticonderoga Stakes.
Breaking from the widest gate of all in the one-mile dirt race originally scheduled for the turf, she immediately jumped out to pressure the leader as they opened a few lengths on the rest of the field. Down the backstretch, she dropped back just over a length behind that runner with the rest of the field still watching the show from multiple lengths behind them.
Amanda’s Folly made a serious challenge for the lead going into the stretch as both runners raced down the middle of the track. One other runner tried to run them down on the rail but it was a two-horse race for the win with Amanda’s Folly taking the advantage inside the final sixteenth.
As they approached the wire, she built up her margin to a neck with the third-place finisher over three lengths behind in the end.
Owned by trainer Linda Rice, Amanda’s Folly is now the winner of five of her 17 starts with five other top three finishes for $345,630 in earnings.
“This filly has a lot of stamina and a mile and an eighth suits her just fine. I was a little concerned about shortening up to the mile that she would struggle with that a little bit, but she wore the leader down. I was thrilled when it came off [the turf],” Rice said.
She was bred in New York by Lambholm, out of three-time winner Privacy. That mare is the dam of three stakes performers from four winners with Amanda’s Folly joined by Grade II winner Ancient Secret as stakes winners for the mare with Jais’s Solitude a Grade III-placed runner.
A granddaughter of Grade II winner and successful broodmare Funistrada, Privacy is a half-sister to the stakes winning Admonition. Funistrada is the dam of Grade II winner Krisada and stakes winner Conte di Savoya with Grade II winners Spring Venture and Ahh Chocolate and Grade III winners Rahystrada and Lone Star Sky also under her name.
Amanda’s Folly is the fourth stakes winner of the year for Mendelssohn and one of 13 stakes performers in 2023 for the stallion. Mendelssohn’s 83 winners is the best of any second crop sire in 2023 while his 99 overall is also the best of the crop overall.
