American Pharoah Yearlings Led By $650,000 Colt at Keeneland

Registering two stakes winners to kick off September, American Pharoah saw success in the sales ring this week, led by John McCormack purchasing a $650,000 colt by the Triple Crown winner during the first book of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Offered as Hip 321, the Paramount Sales-offered colt is out of the multiple stakes winner and Group I-placed Snowy Winter, who is already the dam of one winner from one to race. Bred in Kentucky by Barronstown Stud, the colt had been a $225,000 short yearling purchase by Odd Fellow’s Bloodstock in January before returning here.

Snowy Winter is one of three stakes winners out of the stakes winning Pamona Ball alongside the Grade III-winning Pamina and multiple stakes winning Hieronymus. In all, there are nine stakes winners among the horses on the page with one other stakes performer.

A $525,000 filly from the Hinkle Farms consignment was the second most expensive offering when Mayberry Farm purchased her during the first day of selling.

The filly saw a big update when her half-brother More Than Looks finished third in the Grade II National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame as the first foal to race out of their dam. That dam is the stakes winning full sister to multiple Grade II winner Takeover Target with the duo out of Vanquished.

Vanquished is a half-sister to Grade I winner Critical Eye, Grade II placed Glamorista, and stakes placed Personable Pete. Her two stakes winners are joined by five other stakes winners and five other stakes performers under third dam Critical Crew.

American Pharoah’s nine yearlings sold during the first book of the sale averaged $365,556 with a median of $350,000. American Pharoah’s yearlings have sold for up to $1,195,525 in 2023 with a median of $335,112 for 19 sold.
