Another Stakes Victory for Munnings’ Chief Cicatriz
It was a second straight stakes victory for Munnings’ Grade III winner Chief Cicatriz (6g Munnings x Super Buggy, by Grand Slam) on Wednesday afternoon when he won the Listed Zia Park Sprint as the favorite to stay undefeated at Zia Park.
The gelding broke well in the six furlong dirt contest and challenged the leader from his spot on the rail with the race quickly turning into a two horse affair in front of the rest of the field. Chief Cicatriz ended the duel in the stretch as he kicked away to win by two lengths under a confident Tyler Baze for owner-breeder Roy Gene Evans.
Trained by Shawn Davis, Chief Cicatriz’s record of 12 wins in 19 starts for nearly $425,000 in earnings includes eight stakes victories, led by a win in last year’s Grade III Aristides Stakes at Churchill Downs.
The gelding is the first foal out of the winning Grand Slam mare Super Buggy, who is a half-sister to the dam of Argentine Champion Suggestive Boy. The dam of three winners from three to race, the mare returned to Munnings this year.
Chief Cicatriz is one of 10 stakes winners and an outstanding 23 stakes horses in 2019 for value sire Munnings, who has 35 lifetime stakes winners led by three-time Grade I winner I’m a Chatterbox.
