Another Winner for Red-Hot Mendelssohn
For the second straight day, Mendelssohn saw a runner visit the winner’s circle when Delight (2f Mendelssohn x Honey Trap, by Medaglia d’Oro) won a Delaware Park Maiden Special Weight.
Delight took up the second spot in the 7 ½ furlong turf race as she let the leader open up a few lengths on the field. Racing five wide in the turn, she caught that one in the early stretch before taking the lead with just over a furlong left to run.
She proved to be much the best, pulling away to a 2 ¼ length victory with the third-place runner 13 ¼ lengths behind her in the end.
The Hickstead Farm-bred filly has never finished off the board in three starts for Augustin Stable and Jonathan Thomas. She was a $400,000 OBS March purchase this year by her trainer as the first foal out of the Medaglia d’Oro mare Honey Trap.
Honey Trap is a half-sister to stakes winners Now Spun, Little Nick V and stakes-placed Winging It. Delight’s third dam is the Grade I winner Pacific Squall
The Mendelssohn cross with mares from the Medaglia d’Oro line also produced yesterday’s winner Ah Jeez, who is out of a Violence mare.
Delight is the 11th winner for Mendelssohn, putting him third among all freshman sires by winners.
