Celadonite First Japanese Winner for Mendelssohn

It was first Japanese winner from two runners for Mendelssohn on Saturday when Celadonite (2f Mendelssohn x Celadon, by Gold Halo) won on debut by 1¼ lengths at Chukyo.

The filly broke well in the seven-furlong dirt race and raced keenly a few paths off the rail in the first flight of horses just behind the leader. She was set down as they entered the stretch with two furlongs left to go and started making her move.

She had the lead just after that and won with relative ease for Silk Racing Co. and trainer Tetsuya Kimura.

Celadonite was bred by Northern Racing out of the three-time winner Celadon, who also produced multiple Grade III winner Copano Kicking. Celadon is a half-sister to stakes winner Moere Genius and out of a half-sister to dual Grade I winner Creator from the family of Group I Irish Oaks winner Dance Design.

Mendelssohn’s winner count now sits at 16, putting him second among all freshman sires by winners. The victory came just a few hours after Miracle earned her second stakes placing in Friday’s Joseph A. Gimma Stakes for the stallion.
