Cupid Juveniles Impress at OBS Under Tack Show

Cupid’s first juveniles continued to impress during the OBS Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds breeze show last week when his 19 offerings proved to be some of the speediest of the sale, led by a bullet breezer.

Sharing the :20.2 fastest quarter with a Classic Empire filly, Cupid’s Hip 576 is the second foal for the winning Yes It’s True mare Callipepla. Bred by Daybreak Stables and purchased by Q Bar J Thoroughbreds, who consigns her here, the filly’s third dam is the dam of Grade III winner Annie Cake with horses such as Grade I Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro under her fourth dam.

“That was a 'wow' work,” Q Bar J Thoroughbreds’ Quincy Adams told Thoroughbred Daily News. “She galloped out strong. She's so classy. She is just a princess. She walked back to the barn like an older horse. She's a cool horse.”

The filly is the only Cupid Q Bar J will be consigning at this sale but Adams has been impressed with the group they’ve had this 2-year-old season.

“We've had three Cupids and we really liked all of them,” Adams told Thoroughbred Daily News. “They've all been kind of different, but the biggest thing that I've seen is that they all have good minds.”

Stopping the clock in the second fastest time for an eighth was Hip 187, who breezed in :10.0 for Sequel Bloodstock. A half-brother to multiple stakes-placed Silvertown, he a half-brother to four winners from four runners overall. Bred by Hidden Lake Farm and 3C Stable, the colt also hails from the family of Grade I winner Bullards Alley with stakes horses under two of his first three dams.

Cupid also had a trio of :10.1 breezers showing off the speed he’s proven to throw to his offspring.

The earliest one of those to go through the ring is Hip 653 from the Mayberry Farm consignment. Out of a half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner The Pamplemousse and stakes winner American Lady, the filly is a half-sister to stakes winner Giza Goddess. Bred by Clarkland Farm, her page also includes Grade I winner Stormello among others with one family member registering his 17th victory after the catalog was released.

Hip 873 from the Advanced Thoroughbreds draft is another who stopped the clock in :10.1. The filly is a half-sister to seven-time winner Gray Dude, who is one of two winners from two to race out of Gray Delta. In all, her first three dams have produced 11 winners from 14 runners. Bred by Donarra Thoroughbreds, this is the filly’s first time through the ring.

Headed to the ring near the end of the sale is Hip 1095 out of a full sister to the active stakes winner The Grass Is Blue. Offered by Golden Thoroughbreds Training and Sales, the filly’s dam already has one winner from one to race with Vancouver’s Vanquisher winning on debut in February. This Jeanne Bruce-bred filly’s third dam is champion Soaring Softly, who has been nearly as good a broodmare as she was on the track.

Among Cupid’s other offerings are Hip 128 out of a Grade III-placed mare; Hip 398 out of a half-sister to Grade I winner Noble’s Promise; Hip 445, a half-brother to stakes placed Flying Aletha; and Hip 772, out of a half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner Fantastic Style.

The OBS Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds kicks off on April 20 and runs through the 23rd, starting at 10 a.m. each day.
