Dugat First Japanese Winner for Practical Joke
Dugat (2c Practical Joke x Untraveled, by Canadian Frontier) kicked off Practical Joke’s Japanese success on Saturday with an easy four length victory at Hanshin.
Purchased for $190,000 by trainer Hideyuki Mori at the OBS March Sale this year, Dugat took the lead early on in the seven furlong turf race and wasn’t for catching. With Yutaka Take aboard, he had a large lead going into the stretch and just pulled away from there under hands and heels.
Raced by Susumu Fujita , the colt was bred by Ralph Kinder and Erv Woolsey out of the multiple stakes placed Untraveled. That mare is a half-sister to stakes winner Artesian and to the dam of stakes-placed Chulula.
The family also includes the Group II winner and multiple Group I-placed Green Perfume and Grade II winner Salty Perfume.
The sire of two stakes winners and five stakes performers, Practical Joke is the sire of 13 winners in 2021 as one of the best North American freshmen.
