Duke of Love 5 ¼ Length Winner for Cupid
One day after registering a third placed runner in the Grade I Kentucky Oaks, Cupid saw another 3-year-old show he has a promising future in Canada when Duke of Love (3c Cupid x Tell The Duchess, by Smart Strike) won at Woodbine by 5 ¼ lengths.
Racing on the Woodbine all weather surface, Duke of Love was keen but soon convinced to rate behind another runner for much of the 6 ½ furlong race until the far turn. He had to race wide to challenge the leader, but the Cupid colt was up for the task and in the stretch did everything and more he needed to win.
Duke of Love easily rolled to a 5 ¼ length win for a second victory in three career starts for Josie Carroll and My Racehorse.
Bred by Caldara Farm, Patrick Costello, David Whitford, and Tom Zwiesler, Duke of Love was an $85,000 2-year-old purchase last year from Julie Davies and broke his maiden over this track in November.
The colt is one of two winners from two foals out of Tell The Duchess, whose dam is a half-sister to the Grade III winning Humble Eight. The family also includes Group I Irish Derby winner Sovereign and Grade II winners Phola, Shonan Mighty, and Go For The Summit among others.
Cupid’s first crop is led by four stakes winners and five stakes performers with Grade II winner and Grade I Kentucky Oaks-placed Desert Dawn the best of them alongside Grade III winner God Of Love.
