Fast Draw Munnings Third Stakes Winner of Year For Sire
It was another successful weekend for Munnings on Saturday when Fast Draw Munnings (3c Munnings x Zuzu’s Petals, by Bedford Falls) won the California Cup Derby at Santa Anita.
The Jeff Mullins trainee broke well and raced in midpack a few paths off the rail in the 1 1/16 mile dirt race with just a few lengths separating him from the leader. Around the turn, the Munnings son moved a little closer to be just off the lead passing the quarter pole with plenty left in hand.
He drew up beside the race favorite with the pair running away from the rest of the field. It was a duel to the finish with both colts not willing to give in but Fast Draw Munnings taking the advantage a few strides before the wire to win by a neck in the end.
The California-bred is raced by Red Baron’s Barn and Rancho Temescal and was bred by Glenn Porter. The colt has never finished worse than third with three of his four runs coming in stakes company.
The colt is out of the six-time winning Zuzu’ Petals with the extended family including Grade I winner Cat’s Cradle among others.
Zuzu’s Petals had a Classic Empire filly last year for her second foal.
Munnings is already on fire in 2022 with three stakes winners – the best of any stallion in the country – and 57 career stakes winners overall.
