Ashford Freshmen Back In The Spotlight at Gulfstream

Just a few weeks after their first juveniles made their 2-year-old sales debut at the OBS March Sale, undefeated Triple Crown winner Justify and Grade I winner Mendelssohn send another group going through the ring at the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Sale.

Justify’s first through the ring comes 16 hips in when Tom McCrocklin sends a British-bred colt out of a full sister to dual Grade I winner Carpe Diem through the ring. The colt is the first out of the Giant’s Causeway mare I’m Wonderful, who is also a half-sister to Grade I winner J.B.’s Thunder, multiple graded stakes winner Farrell, multiple stakes winner Doncaster Rover, and Grade II-placed Semper Fortis.

Just a few hips later is Hip 30 from Pick View. Breezing just a tick off the quarter bullet in :20.4, the colt is the second foal out of a three-quarter sister to the dual Grade I winner Pioneerof the Nile. Also a half-sister to multiple graded stakes-placed Forefathers, the colt’s dam has major potential to produce a stakes winner with her half-sister producing a stakes runner who then produced a stakes runner. Each of his dams on the page have also produced stakes performers, except for his own young dam – who has yet to have a runner.

Just a tick off the furlong bullet with a :10.0 breeze, Hip 84 consigned by Wavertree Stables is bred to be a classic horse.

The colt is a half-brother to Grade I Belmont Stakes winner Tapwrit and two other stakes performers out of the Grade I winner Appealing Zophie. That mare has produced six winners from nine to race with two of her daughters also produced stakes performers. One of those is the dam of stakes winning Kenai Bob, who had updated earnings after the catalog was released, and the other is the dam of juvenile stakes-placed Bohemian Frost.

Two are set to go through the ring for Grade I Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner and record-breaking Grade II UAE Derby winner Mendelssohn on Wednesday, starting with Hip 58.

Bred by Spendthrift Farm, the March-born filly from the Wavertree Stables consignment is the third out of multiple stakes winner Singing Kitty, who has a winner from her first runner. The filly’s stakes-winning third dam is the dam of stakes winner Ballado’s Thunder, who also produced the multiple stakes winning Backsideofthemoon.

SGV Thoroughbreds is the consigner of Mendelssohn’s Hip 58, a colt out of the Pleasantly Perfect mare Switched Up. The dam of three winners from three to race, Switched Up is a half-sister to the dual Grade I winner Switch and stakes winner Keystone Gulch.

Both Keystone Gulch and her winning half-sister Tessie Flip have produced stakes performers, as has their unraced half-sister Art Affair.
