Mares In Foal to Gunite Selling at Keeneland January

Four mares carrying foals from Grade I winner Gunite’s first crop are set to go through the ring this week with all four selling during the first day of the three-day Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale.

The first to sell is Hip 265, the Legacy Bloodstock consigned Lady Mila offered on behalf of Stone Columns Stables.

A winning Into Mischief mare, this will be the third foal for Lady Mila, whose first foal is a 2-year-old and second is an Epicenter yearling. Lady Mila is out of the stakes placed That’s a Lady, who has two others to race including one winner. That’s a Lady is one of five stakes performers out of Competition, whose runners are led by Grade III placed Desert Dynamo and Ambusher. This is also the extended family of Grade I winner Sailor’s Valentine.

Carrying her second foal by Gunite on a March 13 cover is Saraghina, a Malibu Moon mare offered by Gainesway as Hip 369.

The mare is a half-sister to the stakes winner and Grade III-placed Move To Gold. That runner is one of six stakes winners on the page. That group also includes Uncle Mo’s stakes winner and Grade I placed Rally Call with the Grade I-placed Alienation leading the five stakes performers.

The foal Saraghina is carrying is bred on the same Gun Runner x Malibu Moon cross as four graded stakes winners from 11 runner – led by Grade I winners Sierra Leone and Locked.

A half-sister to American Pharoah’s stakes winner Upper Case and the stakes placed Ever Smart sells as Hip 440 through Gainesway.

By Horse of the Year California Chrome, Café Night is a half-sister to two winners from three to race out of a full sister to Grade I winner Battle of Midway and half-sister to dual stakes winner Moretti. This page is stacked from top to bottom with those under Café Night’s third dam including Grade I winners Patternrecognition and Mixto.

The last to sell for Gunite is Hip 452, the Tapit mare Light The Sky offered by Runnymede Farm.

The dam of two winners from four runners, the 12-year-old Light The Sky saw an update just three days into the new year when her 4-year-old won at Turfway Park. Track Light, won by 1 ½ lengths but saw the third placed runner finish eight lengths behind him.

Light The Sky is one of 14 to race out of Heat Lightning, whose runners also include champion Stevie Wonderboy, Group III winner and Grade I placed Theysken’s Theory, stakes placed Queen Joanne, and the granddam of multiple graded stakes winner Somelikeithotbrown.

The foal Light The Sky is carrying is bred on the golden Gun Runner x Tapit cross that has produced Grade I winner Society among nine stakes winners and 13 stakes performers.

This year’s Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale kicks off on January 13 with each session taking place at 10:00a.m. ET.
