Mendelssohn Brings Strong Hand to Keeneland November

Only a day after his first weanlings debut at Fasig-Tipton, Mendelssohn’s first of 20 weanlings on offer at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale goes through the ring as Hip 88.

That filly consigned by Eaton Sales for breeder Barronstown Stud is out of the stakes winning Parisian Affair. The dam of seven foals to race, Parisian Affair is also the dam of stakes winner Crimson China and granddam of Grade II-placed Belle Laura. Parisian Affair herself is also one of two stakes winners for her own dam, alongside Group I winner Elusive City with Canadian champion Luke’s Alley under the filly’s third dam.

Crestwood Farm consigns Hip 385 for Kendall E. Hansen, M.D. Racing, out of the winning Grand Slam mare Palomanegra. A half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner Falling Sky, Palomanegra’s first six dams have all produced stakes winners with Palomanegra herself the dam of three winners from four to race. The mare’s half-sister Lemon Splash has already shown that her immediate family can produce stakes winners as the dam of stakes winning Snow Man with both Palomanegra and Lemon Splash out of stakes-placed Sea Dragoness.

The third foal out of her dam Sweet to the Beet, Hip 476 bred by Gerry Reid is consigned by Hartwell Farm. The filly is out of a half-sister to stakes winner and multiple Grade I-placed Street Girl with the pair out of a half-sister to Grade III winner Golden Sonata, who has produced three stakes horses, and another stakes producer in the stakes placed Le Chateau.

The second foal out of four-time winner and stakes-placed Chaparella, Hip 565 offered by Four Star Sales is bred by Rusty Roberts. Chaparella is a third generation stakes horse with her stakes-placed dam Donna D also producing stakes placed Streetlady, who finished second in the Cincinnati Trophy – a race Donna D’s dam won.

The first foal out of the winning Tale of the Cat mare Crown Royal Queen, Hip 588 offered by Taylor Made Sales is out of a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Sky Promise, who is out of stakes winning Maddie’s Promise. Bred by Forgotten Land Investment in Pennsylvania, the colt also hails from the family of champion Housebuster with 16 stakes winners named on his page.

Hip 693 bred by Forging Oaks and offered by Eaton Sales has seen big updates on her page since the catalog was released with three horses under her first and second dam winning in recent weeks. A half-sister to stakes winner and Grade II-placed Battle Force out of Fusaichi Pegasus’ stakes-placed mare Leo’s Pegasus, the filly’s dam’s Grade II-winning half-sister Gaudeamus also the dam of Hong Kong champion Golden Sixty. The winner of 12 of his 13 Hong Kong starts, Golden Sixty added both a Group II and a Group III win to his record over the last month and a half. Golden Sixty is one of 11 stakes horses named under Hip 693’s second dam alone.

Hip 1194 is the second foal out of a three-quarter sister to stakes winner and Grade I-placed Giovanni Boldini. Their half-sister Magic Madison gave this page a timely update when her stakes winning daughter Lucky Stride added a stakes placing to her resume in the Listed Violet Stakes in late September. Offered by Taylor Made Sales on behalf of breeder DP Racing, the filly’s multiple Grade I-placed third dam La Promenade is a half-sister to Argentina champion La Galerie and Grade I winner Gouache, who also produced champion Guernika.

A three-quarter sister to stakes-placed Fairyland, who sold for $700,000 at this sale last year in foal to American Pharoah, the Runnymede Farm and Peter J. Callaghan-bred Hip 1358 will be offered by Runnymede from Barn 39. Out of the Elusive Quality mare Dame Ursula, the filly is bred on the same Scat Daddy x Elusive Quality cross as four stakes horses, including Group I winner No Nay Never. Bred to be a stakes winner, the April-born chestnut’s dam is a half-sister to Japanese champion Agnes Digital and stakes winners Jalisco Light and Shell Game in addition to Group I-placed Reach for the Moon.

Summerfield sends out Hip 1551 on Friday, a half-sister to Grade II winner Ancient Secret and Grade III-placed Jais’s Solitude out of a half-sister to stakes winner Admonition and the dam of multiple graded stakes places Smart N Pretty. Born in February, the filly’s great-granddam is Grade II winner and successful broodmare Funistrada, the dam of three stakes horses and multiple stakes producers.

Others to watch by Mendelssohn at the Keeneland November Sale include Hip 259 from Castle Park Farm, out of a half-sister to two stakes winners; Frankfort Park Farm’s Hip 268 from the family of champion Mastercraftsman; Crestwood Farm’s Hip 1091, the a grandson of stakes winner and Group I-placed Gifted Girl; Hip 1269 from the family of three-time Grade I winner Copelan; Hip 1545 out of a half-sister to recent stakes placed Palace Avenger offered by Paramount Sales; and Hip 1776 offered by Brookdale Sales on behalf of George W. Ruggiero, a granddaughter of multiple graded stakes winner Unzip Me.
