Mendelssohn Colt On Top at Keeneland

For the fourth straight session, a Coolmore stallion saw his weanling lead all in their age group during a Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale session when a colt by Grade I Breeders’ Cup winner Mendelssohn sold for $300,000.

Tying with Uncle Mo’s 3-year-old daughter Sex Symbol and one other for the overall session lead, the colt was purchased by OXO Equine from Four Star Sales and breeder Ginger Moore.

The second foal out of Abuntia, the February-born colt’s dam is a half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner St. Joe’s Bay with his granddam a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Outstander. Descending from multiple champion and Grade I winner Susan’s Girl, the colt’s page also includes three-time Grade I winner Copelan and stakes winner Paramount Jet.

“That was incredible,” Tony Lacy of Four Star Sales. “We knew we had a nice colt at the barn. Quality has been selling very well and we were optimistic, but again you never know where that level is as far as what a horse like that can bring. Obviously, he is a great advertisement for the stallion. Mendelssohn has been an exciting stallion. A lot of people have really been trying to find the better specimens by him. And there are a lot to choose from. So that was exciting.”

This colt was the second $300,000 weanling for Mendelssohn this week after a colt sold to Amerman Racing for the same price on Sunday at Fasig-Tipton.

Multiple graded stakes winner and record setter Mendelssohn is the best bred son of Scat Daddy at son as the half-brother to champion sire Into Mischief and 11-time Grade I winner Beholder.
