Mendelssohn Strikes Again at OBS

After having the highest priced filly during the first session of the OBS March Two-Year-Olds In Training Sale, Mendelssohn was back on Day 2 with four more six-figure horses.

That group was led by the Paul Sharp-consigned filly out of Honey Trap sold to Jonathan Thomas for $400,000 half-way through the session.

Breezing in :10.1 during the Under Tack Sale, the filly’s third dam is the Grade I-winning Pacific Squall. That mare has three stakes producing daughters, including this filly’s granddam, who is the dam of both stakes winning Little Nick V and Now Spun.

The first foal of the Medaglia d’Oro mare Honey Trap, her family also includes stakes winner and Grade II-placed Empressof The Nile and Grade III winner Sicupira Gais.

Top Line Sales registered a good day with Coolmore America stallions on Thursday with a $1 million American Pharoah filly the most expensive filly of the sale. That one was joined by the $360,000 Mendelssohn filly out of Good Omen at the barn - their fifth most expensive of the draft.

Purchased by Maverick Racing and Siena Farm, the Mendelssohn filly was a :10.1 breezer as the second foal out of Good Omen. That mare is a half-sister to stakes-placed Philanthropic with the pair out of a half-sister to two-time Horse of the Year Curlin and the dam of stakes winner Conquest Strate Up.

Mendelssohn also has a colt headed to Japan after Katsumi Yoshida purchased a colt out of Halo Dolly for $280,000 from Kings Equine.

The colt was given a stakes winning update in February when three-quarter brother Barraza won the Grade III San Simeon Stakes a month after winning the Clocker’s Corner stakes. Barraza is the first to race out of multiple graded stakes winning Halo Dolly, who is one of four winners for her own dam.

Mendelssohn’s 11 sold averaged $230,182 at OBS, the third highest average for a freshman sire at the sale.
