Midsummer March Another Winner for Mendelssohn
Mendelssohn’s $425,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling Midsummer March (3f Mendelssohn x Munny Spunt, by Munnings) showed plenty of promise on Saturday with a Maiden Special Weight victory at Oaklawn Park.
Making her second career appearance in the 1 1/16-mile race, she was happy to race in the second flight of runners three paths from the rail as she relaxed down the backstretch. As they worked their way around the far turn, Midsummer March raced up to the leaders and had her head in front at the top of the stretch.
Once she gained the lead, it was all about increasing her margin with Midsummer March winning by 2 ¼ lengths for Walking L Thoroughbreds and Kenny McPeek.
In addition to her racing owners buying her for $425,000, Midsummer March was also a $280,000 weanling purchase by Sycamore Hall Thoroughbreds from Hunter Valley.
Bred by Mountmellick Farm, Midsummer March is out of Munnings’ Grade III winner Munny Spunt, who is out of a half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner Blues Street. The filly’s fourth dam is Grade I winner Stormy Blues.
Mendelssohn is the sire of 13 winners in 2024 with his two stakes winners the best of all third crop sires. The stallion’s five stakes performers puts him second behind only Justify this season.
